Abstract

Language is divided into two kinds, the first is spoken language which is typically associated by linguistic with conversation that is produced, processed and then evaluated in the context of face to face exchange, and the second is written language which is typically associated with the language of books and explanatory prose as found in schools. In this study the authors analyzed lexical cohesion on Tempo Magazine. Tempo is an Indonesian weekly magazine that generally covers news and politics published by Tempo media group. This study uses Halliday and Hasan theory to analyze. This research uses descriptive qualitative analysis method. This method provides complete information, tells and interperts existing data. This study uses content analysis for collecting the data. The data used in tempo magazines are December 14th 2017, December 17th 2017, December 19th 2017, and December 22nd 2017 in the food and travel columns. The writer collects the data by printing screen and reading on the website Tempo magazine en.tempo.co then the writer collects lexical cohesion device then make it into the table which then described one by one into several tables. In this research the writer found type and meaning of lexical cohesion. The type of lexical cohesion used in Tempo magazine there are six kinds of lexical items found are repetition, synonym, antonym, meronym, hyponym, and collocation. While the meaning of lexical cohesion use in Tempo Magazine are repetition which is a repeated word and does not change meaning, synonym means different word but same meaning, antonym means that two word with opposite meaning but still in one line of group, hyponym means a word has many meanings and forms but still in one sense, meronym means a part or component something, collocation means a two or more word often use together for form a unity of meaning. The conclusion from this research in food and travel coloumn in Tempo Magazine lexical cohesion found has a function to explain and emphasize what the news writers means to their readers.
