Abstract

Personal metadiscourses (I, we, you) are commonly applied in written language. Only a few of them can be found in spoken language. Once there is the spoken one, they are typically performed in monologue setting, such as classroom, seminar, or lecturer environment. Due to this situation, this study is conducted to analyze the use of personal metadiscourse performance in BBC HARDtalk dialogue program. The focus is divided between two parties, namely British as the interviewer and African as the interviewee in order to compare the usage of personal metadiscourse between two nationalism. Specifically, this study is aimed at explaining: (1) the functions of personal metadiscourse that mostly appear between British-English and African-English, (2) the differences/similarities of personal metadiscourse between British-English and African-English, (3) and the amount of personal metadiscourse spoken by British-English and African-English. Data for this research were taken from 5 videos of BBC HARDtalk, totaling 19,044 words, uploaded on YouTube. This study uses mixed method approach of qualitative and quantitative to identify, calculate, and interpret the data. To count the concordances of each unit of personal metadiscourse, AntConc is chosen as the counting software.
The result of the analysis showed that British preferred to use Reviewing function of Metatext and Managing Comprehension function Audience Interaction. While African-English preferred to use Clarifying and Reviewing function of Metatext and Managing Comprehension of Audience Interaction. British-English and African-English almost used the same function that is Reviewing and Managing Comprehension. The difference between the two, British-English is more inclined to Audience Interaction, while African-English is more inclined to Metatext. For the amount, British-English represented 64% of personal metadiscourse usage while 36% established by African-English. Finally, based on the findings, this study is hoped to develop future research of the personal metadiscourse performance in many spoken language and academic setting, specifically in dialogue terms.
