Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze the use of semiotics in the movie Istirahatlah Kata-Kata. This movie has signs that can be interpreted as a form ofunderstanding life in the form of images, phrases or sentences. This moviecontains many implicit meanings for the community. The purpose of this study isto find out: (1) the types of semiotic signs, (2) the meaning of denotation andconnotation meaning. The writer uses descriptive qualitative approach duringdoing this research. The data of this research is images, phrases, or sentence has ameaning. The collects ofthe data in this study: (1) browsing the historical movie(2) watching the movie (3) downloading movie from website https://terbit21.com.While the procedure of data analysis are (1) choosing the data of images, phrasesor sentences, (2) classifying some types of semiotic signs from some characters,(3) determining the percentage of data from the types of semiotic signs, (4)
finding the meaning of denotation and connotation. Based on Pierce's theory(1893), there are three types of semiotic signs, namely icon, index, and symbol.The highest frequency of the types of semiotic signs used is index which is 89.65%, then for the semiotic icon type that is 6.9 % and the semiotic type of symbol is3.45 %. There are many different meanings between denotation meaning andconnotation meaning. Like one of the phrases included in the types of semioticindex, the phrases kambing hitam which has denotation meaning a goat havingblack color. For connotation meaning is a person or something that is blamed foran event even though he was not proven guilty. In this movie, various figurativeterms are found to be used to illustrate the condition of the government in the NewOrder era. In this study, it is hoped that this research can provide an explorationand interpretation of the meaning outside and surface in movie
