Keyword: Semiotics, Start Up, Connotative, and Denotative
This study aims to analyze signs using Roland Barthes' semiotics, and analyze the denotative and connotative meanings of signs contained in the Korean drama "Start Up". This study explains: (1) the types of signs that appear in the Korean drama "Start Up", (2) the denotative and connotative meanings of each sign contained in the Korean drama "Start Up". The researcher uses a qualitative approach as a research method. The data source is a Korean drama with the title "Start Up" and has 16 episodes. Data collection was carried out by: (1) searching for the Korean drama "Start Up" on Telegram, (2) downloading every episode of the Korean drama with that title, (3) watching 16 selected drama episodes, (4) selecting and capturing scene screens. While the procedure for analyzing the data is: (1) selecting the scene in the Korean drama "Start Up" that has been selected, (2) classifying signs based on objects from Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, such as sign, denotative meaning and connotative meaning, (3) displaying data in the form of screenshots based on the signs found and classification of object types, (4) describing the denotative and connotative meanings of each screenshot, (5) drawing conclusions. This study shows that not all scenes of the Korean drama "Start Up" have complete sign types based on the classification of signs from Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Incomplete types of signs in some scenes are not a problem, because these scenes still have meaning by looking at the drama as a whole. Several scenes have different meanings both denotatively and connotatively. Most of the data shows the dominance of positive connotations, this can be a positive impression for fans of the Korean drama "Start Up".
