Abstract

Keywords: Black English, Twitter, Miley Cyrus.
This study was conducted to analyze the grammatical structures and vocabulary items of Black English used by Miley Cyrus on @MileyCyrus twitter account and also to find out why Miley Cyrus does not consistently use Black English on her twitter account. Black English is a phenomenon of language diversity. Because not all Standard English speakers understand Black English, misunderstanding may often occur when it comes for them to interpret utterances in Black English. By the same token, not all black people use Black English as is also true that some white people are fluent in Black English. This study uses some theories to answer the two problems cited earlier, namely the theory proposed by Smitherman on black grammatical structures and the choice of words and Brown and Gilman’s theory is used to clarify the second problem. Descriptive qualitative design is the most appropriate for this study, and the writer conducts a library study for the collection of the data. Through a meticulous and careful analysis it is found that Miley Cyrus does not use Black English patterns on her whole tweets because she is a white girl. She uses Black English patterns for several items only, namely in using the same verb in the present or the past tense, using the same verb form for all persons, in using done, been, personal pronouns, double negative and the concept of plurality. She also uses several Black English vocab such as got, gonna, gotta, gimme, lemme, what’cha, ain’t and another contractions such as s’pose, ‘stead, ‘em. D’you.
