Abstract

Keywords: Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH), English, Korean, Native Language Interference, Phonetic Many studies have disclosed how Korean native speakers pronounce English words differently. However, there is not much research emphasizing the causes of these differences, let alone linking differences with native language inteference. By drawing comparisons between the sound structure of English and Korean using the Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH), this study will look at how native languages can influence the use of foreign languages and cause differences in pronunciation in popular songs. Transcription of fifteen BTS songs will be used as a data source to determine native language interference. This study reveals several findings. First, there is the addition of vowels, changes in syllables, changes in vocal height and vocal articulation of places, and replacement of consonants with other consonants to occur in English words written in Hangeul characters throughout the song. Second, how English words change is because some sounds in English do not exist in Korean. This analysis found that there are differences between Korean and English phonemes which cause pronunciation of English words differently in the Korean version.
