Abstract

When people speak or write, they produce text which can be identified as the tool for communication where spoken and written forms are applied in the real life. One of spoken forms which has big influence is speech, where it has purpose to reveal idea, thought and persuade the other people to do something. In spoken and written text, cohesion is one important component to constructs and makes the text effective and efficient which make the reader or the hearer easier to understand it. Cohesion is one of part in discourse. To create a good speech, the speaker must use a good cohesive to get a good link. The purposes of the research are to know what types of lexical cohesion usedn and the meanings in the speech text “Remark by the the president at Islamic Society of Baltimore”. This study is qualitative descriptive study, where the data sources are Obama’s speech text and the data is about lexical cohesion. Then , they are identified and analyzed by using Halliday and Mathiessen’s theory about lexical cohesion, the result the study shows that all types of lexical device are used, the dominantly is Repetition, repetition contains 78.6%, synonymy contains 7.46%, Antonymy 2.99%, Hyponymy 5.47%, Meronymy contains 3.48% and the less type of lexical relation is collocation which only contains 2%. The meaning of lexical items or selected words found are related with the topic of Barack Obama’s speech, the dominant meanings of lexical cohesion found are about religion. the study does not find the meaning that go off from the topic. The study finds the types of lexical cohesion that make the meaning beyond the speech can be delivered well, like same word in repetition, same sense although not totally same in synonymy, opposite meaning in antonymy, same basic in hyponymy, of a part in meronymy, and relation in the same enviroment in collocation. Due to fact the Cohesion is on point to create a good spoken or written text, it is suggested for the Students, Lectures, Teachers, and for the readers to learn more about Discourse Analysis especially Cohesion.
