Abstract

This study is established to analyze the use of positive politeness strategies by main character in film Clown 2014. The objectives of this research are to (1) identify the kinds of positive politeness strategies, and to (2) describe the most common positive politeness strategy. This research applies descriptive qualitative. It concerns to describe the data in the form of utterances produced by main character. The source of data is notes of the transcript in film clown 2014. In conducting this research, the analysis of data uses positive politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson’s (1987). The data are categorized into the types of positive politeness strategies. And then, find out the most common are employed by the main characters. The result of the study shows that eleven types positive politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the most common positive politeness strategies are employed by main characters in the film Clown 2014. In the use of positive politeness strategies, the main characters in the film uses Stratrgy 1 Notice, attend to hearer (his interest, want, need and good) for 1 times, strategy 4 (use in group identity markers) for 2 times, strategy 5 (seek agreement) for 1 times, strategy 6 (Avoid disagreement) for 3 times, strategy 7 (presuppose/rise/assert common ground) for 19 times, strategy 8 (Joke) for 1 times, strategy 10 (Offer, promise) for 2 times, strategy 11 (Be optimistic) for 1 times, strategy 12 (Be optimistic) for 3 times, strategy 13 (give or ask for reason) for 2 times, and strategy 14 (assume or assert reciprocity) for 1 times. Next, the most common positive politeness types used by main character in film Clown 2014 are strategy 7 (presuppose/rise/assert common ground) with 54,2% of the total utterances in the fim. Next, it followed by strategy 6 (avoid disagreement) with 8,57% of the total utterances in the film. Then, strategy 12 (include both speaker and hearer in the activity) with 8,57% of the total utterances in the fim. Furthemore, strategy 4 (use in group identity markers) with 5,71%, strategy 10 (offer, promise) with 5,71%, and strategy 13 (give or ask for reason) with 5,71% of the total utterances in the film. Later on, Strategy 1 noice, attend to hearer (his interest, wants, needs and goods) with 2,85%, %, strategy 5 (seek agreement) dengan 2,85%, strategy 8 (joke) with 2,85%, strategy 11 with 2,85% and the last strategy 14 with 2,85% of the total utterances in the film. This study suggests for further research can engage the participants as many as possible and conduct the data in the other settings and themes in order to rich the data and also applying any recent theories for producing various findings in the pragmatic studies
