Abstract

Detective Sherlock Holmes is the most popular fictional character that has been adapted into wide variety of different platform numerous time with varying degrees of fidelity to the original characters, stories, and setting. Despite his great name, Sherlock has some infamous traits that exludes him from the stereotypical hero. He belongs to another type of hero, namely Byronic Hero. This study analyses Byronic Hero qualities that are portrayed by Sherlock Holmes in Victorian era (A Study in Scarlet novel) and the one from the 21st century (Sherlock BBC TV series: A Study in Pink). Peter L. Thorslev Jr.’s The Byronic Hero: Types and Prototypes (1962) was used as a definitive work on the Byronic Hero qualities. This study then compares the Byronic Hero qualities between the two Sherlocks by finding the differences and similiarities in the qualities. In analysing the data, Hermeneutics Method was applied to reveal the meaning contained in the novel and the series. The data for this analysis are taken from the descriptions, utterances, and conversation from the novel and the series that are related to the topic at hand. From the analysis, it is confirmed that the Victorian Sherlock Holmes and the modern Sherlock holmes are Byronic Hero since they bear most of the Byronic Hero qualities. The novel Sherlock Holmes has nine out of fifteen qualities of Byronic Hero, there are: Mysterious and magnetic; High level of intelligence and perception; Antisocial and an outcast; Arrogant, larger than life attitude; Social dominance; Cynical; Cunning; Bipolar tendency, a certain level moodiness; and, Ruthless in his aim. While the film Sherlock Holmes has ten out of fifteen qualities, which are: Mysterious and magnetic; High level of intelligence and perception; Antisocial and an outcast; Arrogant, larger than life attitude; Social dominance; Cunning; Ruthless in his aim; Self destructive behavior; Self-critical and introspective; and, Disrespectful of rank and privilege. What differs the original Sherlock Holmes and the adapted one concerning Byronic Hero qualities is that the former is cynical and has a certain level of moodines. Those qualities are not carried by the Sherlock Holmes in the film, instead, he has three qualities that the novel one does not have, they are: self-destructive, self-critical and disrespectful of rank and privilege. The both Sherlocks share some qualities in Byronic Hero qualities. They are mysterious and magnetic to those around them, have high level of intelligence, are antisocial and considered as an outcast, carry social, wear a larger than life attitude, are cunning, and are also ruthless in their aim. The two characters materialized from different time span so they eventually bear some differences and similarities in the qualities but basically they still carry most of the qualities of Byronic Hero.
