Thesis.English Literature Study Program.Graduate Program.Faculty of Language and Literature Wijaya Putra University. Advisor: Shanty A. Y. P. S. Duwila, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Semiotics, Graffiti, Political Graffiti In Indonesia Graffiti phenomenon has become a popular culture. Graffiti exits around us, in public space, wall and toilet. Its existence sometime lasts just a few days then being erased, but some other exists for a long time. Some people think graffiti is a kind of vandalism, some other think it is a piece of art. What truly someone motivates to write graffiti on a public wall, for others to see? What is spesific purposes? These questions have caught the interest to me because graffiti has spesific purposes that’s not easy to be understood. So the writer is interested to analyze the political graffiti in Indonesia. Political graffiti is the most open system of graffiti, meaning that all who are confronted with these texts can understand the messages being conveyed. Therefore, semiotics can be used to analyze the signs that appear in the images of graffiti. This study is conducted to analyze semiotic on political graffiti in Indonesia. There are two statements of the problems: (1) What types of graffiti are found on political graffiti in Indonesia? (2) What are denotation and connotation meanings of each political graffiti in Indonesia? The writer uses descriptive qualitative approach during doing this research. The data of this research were 30 political graffiti images in Indonesia. The study collects the images of the political graffiti from website http://www.google.co.id. The data are categorized into the types of political graffiti. The analysis of data uses rules as the pattern of classifyingtypes of political graffiti based on Gadsby’s framework of types of graffiti. And Roland Barthes’ theory is applied to find out the denotation and connotation meanings of political graffiti. Based on Gadsby’s (1995) theory, there are six types of graffiti. But in these 30 political graffiti images, the researcher only found four types of graffiti on political graffiti. They are public, folk epigraphy, historical and humorous. In this research, the highest frequency of types of graffiti used on political graffiti in Indonesia is public. In this research, the writer also found the denotation and connotation meaning on each political graffiti. The most of reader in the reading the graffiti only based on the meaning in the context, it is denotation meaning. The study is expected this study can give the exploration and interpretation the meaning beyond and surface of graffiti. So people will not only see and realize the graffiti, but they have to listen it then give responses.
