Abstract

Language is used to communicate, sometimes the utterances that delivered by the speaker to the hearer or addressee is ambiguous. Without context the addressee will be difficult to understand the meaning of the speaker clearly. Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows is one of many novels with many utterances, that the meaning will not be understood when there is no deictic expression that used in utterance. This study is conducted to identify the types of Deixis found in Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows novel and the function of each type of deixis. This research uses the theory of Deixis from Levinson (1983) to do the analysis the type of deixis and Yule (1996) to analysis the function of deixis. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The data is the utterances spoken by all characters in the novel from chapter one to ten and the source of the data is the novel of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The finding showed that there are five types of deixis based on Levinson’s theory in utterances of Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows novel, namely; person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. From the analysis it showed that the function of the five types of deixis is pointing. Thus, the point of deictic expression from each utterance is based on the context.
