Abstract

This study focuses on the word formation process. With the regard to the used that acronyms always appear, that magazine as a written communication is read by many people from different levels of ages, that Forbes Indonesia contains many acronyms and also that those acronyms are formed through acronyms process, the writer then wants to conduct a research on acronyms processes in the Forbes Indonesia magazine articles. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative approach in this study, the data was taken from Forbes Indonesia magazine article in March edition 2014. To know whether the acronyms are considered into acronym, the writer used Elsevier’s Dictionary of Acronyms, Initialism, Abbreviations and Symbolism (2003). From the finding, the writer found 51 acronyms in Forbes Indonesia magazine articles in March edition 2014. The writer classified the parameter of acronym into three categories: shortening, spelling, pronunciation. In spelling and shortening most of the acronym is written in capital letter and consist of the initial letter of a set of word. It is mainly about taking the initial letter of a set of other word to be practical in to the other language. There are two acronyms pronounced: as an individual letter and a word. There are some acronyms that can be uncovered from this present study that there are acronyms that have gone through pronounced as both in an individual letter and a word, as they could not be classified into two acronym pronunciation. With regard to the frequency and predominant pronunciation of the acronyms, the writer concludes that the most frequent pronunciation used in Forbes Indonesia Magazine is pronounced as a word (80,3%). The second is pronounced as an Individual letter process (13,8%). The third is pronounced both as a word and an individual letter (5,9%). Acronyms that have gone through pronounced as an individual letter and a word are U.S, B2B & B2G, The word U.S can be pronounced as United States of America, as a individual letter [juː'es]. There are some words that have been formed using number such as B2B and B2G. These words were formed using number 2 which represent the sound of word.
